Artist: Hukwe Zawose
In his native Tanzania, Hukwe Zawose is perceived as an icon, and in some cases, an immortal, mystical being. His voice generated attention early on when he would sing while working on his family's farm. It wasn't long before he became skilled at playing indigenous instruments of the region and started recording music (he gathered enough attention that even the Tanzanian president took notice). CHIBITE showcases the raw, impassioned singing of Zawose against a backdrop of izezes (type of violin), ilimbo (large thumb piano) and filimbi (flute). The songs, which are sung in Swahili and the Kigogo tongue, tend to be about daily life, as well as local folklore, spirituality and politics.
