Artist: Doudou N'diaye Rose
Doudou N'diaye Rose is the undisputed drumming master in his native Senegal. Some say he may even be the best drummer in the world. On DJABOTE, Rose leads a group of 50 Muslim percussionists (many of them relatives) and 80 Catholic singers in one rousing extravaganza of percussion. Listening to this album, you can't help but marvel at the rhythmic abilities being displayed - the music has many layers and is quite complex, yet the rhythms are so strong that the listener is completely drawn in and hypnotized by the whirl of beats. Another very interesting aspect of this album is the way the performance is structured. Rose leads his extensive ensemble of musicians like a conductor leading an orchestra. This is really a fascinating percussion release that shows just how intense the sound of many drums played in unison can be.
