Artist: Remmy Ongala
Remmy Ongala is a major musical icon in Tanzania, especially around its capitol city of Dar-es-Salaam where he lives. Referred to as the "Voice of the Tanzanian people," the artist fills his lyrics with social commentary and political criticism - covering everything from the treatment of the poor to the threat of AIDS to disapproval of local leaders. The music of Ongala and his band Orchestre Super Matimila features more than just insightful lyrics however - there's some heavy rhythms underneath as well. Utilizing a combination of soukous style, African percussion and guitar playing, the ensemble creates a musical blend that's energetic and upbeat, at times with a bit of a Caribbean flair.
