Artist: Tabu Ley / Afrisa International
"Soukous" is a type of dance music indigenous to the Congo-Zaire region (although it has since spread across Africa) featuring guitar-based rhumba-esque rhythms, flashy brass arrangements, and festive singing. With over 150 albums to his name and a career that spans 50 years, Tabu Ley is one of the fathers of this Afro-Cuban musical form. BABETI SOUKOUS, from Ley and his band Afrisa International Orchestra, features up-beat rhythms with a tropical quality reminiscent of Caribbean music. Being more adventurous than some of his contemporaries, Ley likes to mix tradition with innovation, thus choosing to introduce elements like rock, R&B, jazz and funk to his musical stew for a more eclectic sound
