Artist: Ali Farka Toure / Ry Cooder

Ali Farka Toure's album TALKING TIMBUKTU has a couple of claims to fame: it was the first album to debut at number one on Billboard's World Music charts and was the recipient of a Grammy Award in said category. A collaboration with Ry Cooder, the album showcases Toure's unique West Malian blues sound, which many have noticed bears a striking resemblance to the work of blues legend John Lee Hooker (despite the fact that neither artist was previously familiar with the music of the other). The album shows its African roots in the subtle rhythms as well as some of the percussion utilized on the album. Western trademarks are present as well in the form of guitars (electric, slide and acoustic) and drums. Thematically, the songs stay close to Toure's roots; the lyrics cover topics like everyday life in Malian culture, love and nature. Guest artists include Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and percussionist Jim Keltner
