Artist: The Justn Vali Trio
The chief instrument of the African island of Madagascar is the valiha. A bamboo (or wood in the case of the Malagasy people) harp-like instrument originally native to the Far East, the valiha has takes on a whole new identity when played by Justin Vali alongside the polyrhythmic sonorities of his fellow ensemble-mates in the Justin Vali trio. Vali's technique is less harp and more of a plucked sound (he uses his long fingernails to produce the effect) and is often performed with noteworthy speed. Fleshing out trio's acoustic folk sound is warm guitar and percolating percussion (frame drums and shakers), whose combined effect is at times reminiscent of island music
